23 May 2011: Alignment of a delicate, novel lead-free piezoelectric material sample on Diamond’s Extreme Conditions beamline I15 for X-ray phase analysis. With lead being removed from electronics, the world leaders in ferroelectrics are trying to find a lead-free alternative before the exemption on piezoelectric materials expires. I15 allows us to examine the phase structure of bulk samples. Thanks to it’s penetration depth through the material and spot size we get a look at the whole material rather than a select area.
